Tina Stolhandske Accepts SBA's 2014 Young Entrepreneur Award
SAN ANTONIO, TX - River City Run owner and founder, Tina Stolhandske, today accepted the Small Business Administration's 2014 Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award. The 28-year-old business owner was presented with the award at a ceremony held to honor and celebrate small business entrepreneurs in conjunction with a nationwide effort to highlight the importance of America's small businesses.
Stolhandske founded River City Run after a tour along Boston's Freedom Trail. River City Run provides a healthy and active way to see the sites of historic San Antonio. Stolhandske and her team of guides host a five kilometer running tour through the heart of San Antonio each Saturday and Sunday, and seven days a week by appointment. The running tour stops by many of the key sites that the downtown/River Walk area has to offer, including the Alamo, the Emily Morgan Hotel, the Menger Hotel, Torch of Friendship, Palacio del Rio, Tower of Americas, La Villita, Arneson River Theatre, Bexar County Courthouse, El Mercado, Spanish Governor's Palace, City Hall, San Fernando Cathedral, the River Walk, Southwest School of Arts, San Antonio Library, the Majestic Theatre, and the Buckhorn Saloon.
Running is nothing new to Stolhandske. The Texas native is a life-long athlete and former Texas Lutheran University track star, in addition to being a San Antonio Certified Tourism Ambassador. And the idea of creating a running tour seemed a logical one to Stolhandske.
"It's an honor to receive an award for something I love to do so much. River City Run was a dream of sorts that combined two of my passions -- running and people," said Stolhandske. "There are so many to thank for the award, but I would especially like to thank my husband Tommy for believing in the idea and encouraging me to pursue this opportunity."
River City Run has experienced steady growth since its inception, serving over 900 tour participants during the 2013 calendar year alone. The business expects to eclipse that total in 2014. The company has taken on four additional tour guides on a part time basis for high demand times.
Stolhandske was nominated for the award by the Harley Taylor Group, a San Antonio based consulting company.
"We are proud of how River City Run, as a for-profit small business, fulfills a need in our San Antonio community in a very innovative and successful way. Tina Stolhandske is an asset to our community and an outstanding ambassador for our city," said Clinton Taylor of the Harley Taylor Group.
Taylor went on to highlight how the San Antonio community has set about creating a collective vision for the future of the city called SA2020 which has prompted a movement to get all San Antonians to help make this vision become reality. According to Taylor, River City Run, is helping in community-wide efforts to meet two very important SA2020 goals -- to ensure that San Antonio residents are among the healthiest in the country and to further develop our downtown area by providing additional activities for residents and visitors.
Each year the President of United States has declared National Small Business Week to formally recognize the contributions of America's small businesses. The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), San Antonio District Office and the South-West Texas Border Small Business Development Center Network were on hand to honor Stolhandske and other SBA award winners.
